Sangare: Brentford's Record Signing Could Be PL's Best

Brentford's £39m club-record signing Mamadou Sangare could be the Premier League's signing of the season, says Mali boss Tom Saintfiet.

Brentford's Record Signing Ready to Shine

When Mamadou Sangare joined Brentford for a club-record £39m from RC Lens, eyebrows were raised. But the Mali international midfielder could easily become the Premier League's top buy this season, according to those who know him best.

The 24-year-old arrives in west London with a growing reputation after helping Lens to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and a French Cup triumph last season. Now, as Brentford prepare to host Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the 2026-27 campaign, Sangare is set to make his Premier League debut — and the Bees' investment could prove to be a masterstroke.

Mali manager Tom Saintfiet, who handed Sangare his international debut in September 2024, is convinced the midfielder has the mentality to thrive at the highest level. Speaking to Sky Sports, Saintfiet recalled the moment Sangare announced himself to the Mali squad with a bold initiation song.

"Yours," Sangare told captain Yves Bissouma when asked which position he'd like to play — a confident response that hinted at the ambition burning inside him.

"I loved that," Saintfiet said. "He's an open, intelligent person - and confident. He knows what he can do."

A Statement of Intent

Sangare did not end up displacing Bissouma in the Mali lineup — they played alongside each other — but he has now taken the veteran's place as Mali's brightest talent in the Premier League. The irony is not lost: Bissouma was released by Spurs this summer and remains without a club, while Sangare will line up against Tottenham on Saturday.

The £39m fee represents a significant outlay for Brentford, but the club's recruitment team has a proven track record of unearthing gems from across Europe. Sangare was one of Lens' most important players as they pushed Paris Saint-Germain all the way in Ligue 1 and lifted the Coupe de France — performances that put him on the radar of several top clubs.

By securing his signature, Brentford have made a statement of intent. They are not merely looking to survive in the Premier League; they are aiming to push into the upper echelons. With Sangare pulling the strings in midfield, the Bees could surprise many this season.

As the Premier League gets underway, all eyes will be on the new signings across the division. But according to Saintfiet, the one to watch is Sangare. "He knows what he can do," the Mali boss said — and Brentford fans will be hoping he proves it on the biggest stage.
