Serie A Injury Crisis: Napoli & Inter Forced Into Changes
Napoli lose Vergara for 3-4 weeks and Olivera returns injured as Allegri plots a back-three switch, while Inter's Curtis Jones faces 3-4 weeks out with an adductor injury.

The October international break has left Serie A's biggest clubs counting the cost, with both Napoli and Inter dealing with fresh injury setbacks ahead of a packed weekend of domestic action. According to Thursday's reports, the damage is significant enough to force tactical rethinks and midfield reshuffles at two of Italy's title contenders.
Napoli's Injury Pile-Up Forces Allegri Rethink
Napoli return to Serie A action on October 10 at home against a high-flying Frosinone side, but they will do so without several key first-team players. Thursday's reports claim that Massimiliano Allegri is plotting a return to a back three after an unfortunate pile-up of injuries during the extra-long September-October international break.
The most immediate concern surrounds Scott McTominay, who is unlikely to start as he has only just returned to training. The midfielder had a procedure carried out on his heart at the start of September and was forced to have two weeks of complete rest after undergoing the operation in Manchester on September 8. He received the go-ahead to resume training with the rest of the first-team group on Wednesday, but a starting role against Frosinone appears premature.
Napoli also lost Italy debutant Antonio Vergara for three to four weeks during the international break, while Mathias Olivera has returned from Uruguay duty with an injury issue. The Partenopei remain without key first-team players Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Alessandro Buongiorno and Alisson Santos as well.
According to Thursday's reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, the mounting absentee list has left Allegri looking at the possibility of swapping from a back four to a 3-4-2-1 for the visit of Frosinone on Saturday evening (19.45 BST). This would be led by the in-form Rasmus Hojlund at centre-forward, with support most likely coming from Kevin De Bruyne and David Neres in the other attacking roles.
The reported Napoli line-up shapes up as: Meret; Beukema, Rrahmani, Marin; Di Lorenzo, Gilmour, Lobotka, Spinazzola; De Bruyne, Neres; Hojlund. It is a significant reshuffle for a side that has already had to absorb the loss of so many senior figures, and the switch to a back three may be as much about protecting a depleted squad as it is about matching up with Frosinone.
Inter Without Curtis Jones for Three to Four Weeks
Inter have their own midfield headache. The Nerazzurri will be without Curtis Jones for the next few weeks due to an adductor injury, but Cristian Chivu has three or four different options to replace the Englishman ahead of Sunday's visit from Parma in Serie A.
According to Thursday's reports, Jones reported for medical tests on Thursday morning and has been diagnosed with an adductor injury that is likely to keep him sidelined for three to four weeks. The 25-year-old arrived at a cost of €35m from Liverpool during the summer transfer window and earned his first start for the Nerazzurri in a Champions League defeat away against Real Madrid in September.
He also started in Inter's most recent match before the international break, a 2-2 draw away against Roma, alongside Nicolo Barella and Piotr Zielinski, the latter starting in the absence of Hakan Calhanoglu.
Assuming Chivu starts with Barella and Calhanoglu in his midfield to face Parma this weekend, he still has a choice of Zielinski, Petar Sucic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aleksandar Stankovic to replace the injured Jones. According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Croatia international Sucic is the emerging favourite to step in against Parma on Sunday evening.
There is a feeling that Sucic will be fresh to start given that he came off the bench in Croatia's final game of the international break, while Zielinski started all four of Poland's games this break and played the full 90 minutes on Monday night. That workload could tip the balance in Sucic's favour as Chivu manages a squad that has already been stretched by continental commitments.
A Wider International Break Problem
The Serie A setbacks are part of a broader pattern. A four-match international break has presented a stress test for clubs across Europe, with hamstring and muscle problems rife. Sunderland, for example, will be without Brian Brobbey, a key striker, and Dan Ballard, a defensive mainstay, because of strains picked up playing for the Netherlands and Northern Ireland respectively.
Bournemouth, yet to win a Premier League match, have lost Alex Scott for up to two months after his performance for England in their 7-0 victory against Croatia won rave reviews. The casualty list also includes Kylian Mbappé and Kai Havertz, both of whom picked up injuries during the recent Nations League fixtures, alongside Alexander Isak and Patrick Dorgu.
Wales head coach Craig Bellamy offered a pointed assessment of the schedule upon completing four matches in 11 days: "The intensity of the squad, the athleticism of it, really, I think it's designed for the elite." Elite club coaches would disagree, with officials viewing matches through their fingers as players pull up and gesture to the bench.
For Napoli and Inter, the immediate task is navigating the weekend without key personnel. Both clubs will hope their respective injury lists shorten rather than lengthen as the season gathers pace. With Serie A fixtures coming thick and fast, squad depth — and the ability to adapt tactically — could prove decisive.
