Tottenham Player Ratings: Maddison Shines, Tonali Struggles vs Coventry
James Maddison marked his first start in 18 months with a brilliant strike as Tottenham beat Coventry. See how we rated every Spurs player in the 3-1 win.

Maddison Marks Return with Stunning Strike
James Maddison produced a brilliant strike on his first start for 18 months as Tottenham secured their first Premier League win of the season against Coventry City. The midfielder, who began his career at Coventry, toned down his celebration out of respect for his former club, but his performance was anything but subdued. Maddison was always prompting and probing, revelling in his return to the starting line-up until understandably tiring. He earned a rating of 8 for his efforts.
According to BBC Sport's player ratings, Maddison's display was the standout in a Spurs side that finally broke their winless start to the campaign. His goal and overall creativity gave Tottenham a cutting edge they had been missing.
Tonali Struggles to Justify Price Tag
While Maddison shone, Sandro Tonali endured another difficult outing. The midfielder, who joined for a reported £100m, showed only occasional flashes and still struggles to justify his hefty price tag. He was rated 6, with the report stating he needs to produce more. Tonali's inability to dominate the midfield remains a concern for Spurs.
Defensively, Micky van de Ven was superb, making a crucial tackle to stop Brandon Thomas-Asante in the first half. His solid all-round display earned him a 7. However, Jan Paul van Hecke had a disappointing night, losing possession for Coventry's goal and looking uncertain at times. He was rated 5.
Other Standout Performances
Tosin Adarabioyo was powerful in the air and did well in physical challenges until he went off injured, earning a 6. Archie Gray was busy and did his best to give Spurs some creative edge, also rated 6. Andrew Robertson showed some trademark surging runs and always willing to [text cuts off].
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky fumbled a first-half corner and was not great with his feet, earning a 5.
